Tips

Talk to everyone, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You might feel embarrassed at the time, but there’s no need. There are no stupid questions when you’re a first home buyer.

Remember that you don't only need to save for your deposit. You're also going to need to pay your lawyer fees, buy appliances, furniture, groceries, and there will always be extra unexpected costs along the way.

"Make sure you know what needs to be done when - we didn't realise we needed a lawyer sorted before we made an offer. That was a shock at the Real Estate Agent's office!"

Tricks

"Find some friends or family members that already own a house and take them along to open homes with you. They might be able to offer extra tips and advice to help you with your search."

"Once you're ready to buy go to different Real Estate Agents and let them know what you're looking for. You can ask them to call you if they have anything that they think would suit."

"When saving your deposit take a look at what subscriptions you're signed up to but you don't really need. Streaming sites are great, but do you really need to be paying for four of them?"

Learnings

"Make sure you look for a Bank that understands you're a first home buyer and will give you the extra help you need along the way."

It’s easier than you think. You hear all these horror stories, and how difficult it is to find a house in this market, but it’s not actually that hard. Don’t overthink it.

"Talk to everybody - your family, friends, bank, real estate agent, lawyer, colleagues. They all have different experiences and knowledge when it comes to buying your first home."

More

The build up to buying your first home is huge, and then all of a sudden you’ve found a house, made an offer, and will be moving in in four weeks. You'll be surprised at just how quickly it all moves

"Don't be discouraged if the process takes a while. It can be disheartening if you can’t find a home at first, but just keep going, you'll get there eventually and it will be great!

"Take a deep breath, you've got this!
