“To make an authentic sustainable impact for our people, members and the community we operate in.”
At SBS, we believe that sustainability flows through into all areas of who we are as an organisation. If we think about the core principles of our SBS Charter which we adopted over 155 years ago. SBS was founded on its commitment to being sustainable and exercising ethical practices and due care in growing the value of SBS. Sustainability is not a new concept for us. As a member-owned bank, we wear our hearts on our sleeves (quite literally ... have you seen our uniforms?!) and this means doing the right thing and that’s a great feeling.
Our commitment to sustainability is demonstrated each and every single day in how we listen to and engage with our members, our involvement in the community, how we treat our team members and how we consider the impact of our decisions right now as well as into the future.
We don’t just want to be a good bank – we want to be a great bank!

Annual Sustainability Reports.
We’re committed to ensuring we stay on track with our sustainability vision and objectives so every year we publish our Annual Sustainability Report. The report provides an overview of our key focus areas, our key themes and the highlights for the year.
Diversity and inclusion at SBS.
We’re all different in some way and we believe that diversity is the spice of life. We welcome our team members challenging the norms and traditional ways of thinking. These unique experiences and views of the world make us even stronger. We currently employ many different nationalities within both our Head Office in Invercargill along with each of our branches throughout New Zealand. Next year, we’ll be celebrating five different generations of team members working here at SBS!
We’re currently working on a more formal diversity and inclusion programme that will help us consider all aspect of diversity and inclusion within our SBS team (as well as our external partnerships) including gender, cultural diversity, age, LGBTQIA diversity and team members with disabilities.

For our members.
You come first
Being a mutual bank means we’re owned by you, our members. That’s why every decision we make is all about you, with profits staying right here in New Zealand.
Home is where the heart is
SBS was established back in March 1869 with the intention of helping people into their own homes and we’ve been doing it for multiple generations ever since. Find out more about how we help people into their own homes.

For our communities.
Sponsorships
SBS proudly supports many amazing Kiwis doing amazing things in our neighbourhoods through our vibrant community partnership programme.

Our team members helping you.
We’re all Kiwis together
OK, so we’re not the biggest bank. But we’re very proud to be a New Zealand bank with all our team members right here. From our Contact Centre in Invercargill to our northernmost branch in Tauranga and 14 branches in between – it’s a special culture we’re all part of.
Opportunity knocks
Being small but nimble means there’s loads of opportunities to grow here at SBS by learning new skills through on-the-job training as well as more formal training paths to move into specialist roles within SBS. We actively encourage and support our team members to advance into further study to be the very best they can be. We enjoy making a difference here at SBS. If you’d like to join us, let’s talk!
For all our futures.
Paper and out
With so many of our members saying ‘Thanks, but no thanks’ to paper statements, we’re now posting 330,000 fewer statements a year. That’s a lot of paper and envelopes saved!
Strong and sustainable
We’re no fly-by-night, Johnny-come-lately. We’ve been around for over 150 years through listening and responding to our Members’ needs, but also by being prudent decision-makers balancing a great today for a strong and sustainable tomorrow.
