Shaun has an extensive 30 year background in the banking industry.  He started his career in Hokitika as a teller and worked his way up into more senior and strategic roles. He has spent the past 13 years in diverse General Management roles that have included leading teams of 1500 people, payments, strategy, products and international transformational programs.

As SBS Group CEO, Shaun is responsible for the performance of SBS Bank along with its three subsidiary businesses; Finance Now Ltd, Funds Administration New Zealand Ltd (FANZ) and Southsure Assurance Ltd.


Shaun has a Masters of Management with Distinction in Banking Management, a Post Graduate Diploma in Banking with Distinction and is a Senior Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Banking.

Mark McLean

Chief Risk Officer

Chartered Accountant, BCom (Acctg), DipGrad (Marketing)

Mark has a financial services industry background spanning more than 20 years primarily in banking risk management. He has held various risk leadership roles in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Netherlands and New Zealand.

As Chief Risk Officer Mark is responsible for establishing and managing the risk framework and the advancement of SBS Bank’s simplification (process improvement and efficiency) and productivity agenda.

Mark has a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accountancy from the University of Otago and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing. He is also a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and Institute of Directors.

Tim Loan

Tim Loan Chartered Accountant, BCom, DipBusStuds (Information Systems)

Chief Financial Officer

Tim is an accountant with 26 years’ experience in the public practice and corporate sectors. He has been SBS Bank’s Chief Financial Officer for the past 11 years, having previously held various senior finance roles working for private and state owned companies in Wellington and Invercargill.

As Chief Financial Officer, Tim is responsible for internal and external financial reporting, treasury operations and risk management, legislative and regulatory compliance, property and fleet management.

Tim has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago and a Graduate Diploma in Information Systems. He is a fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. He also attended the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program in 2011.

Phil Jamieson 

Phil Jamieson MSc (Hons), BSc

General Manager Development

Phil’s background is primarily based in the banking, finance and retail sectors both internationally and locally. This experience includes senior/executive roles with a global banking group in the United Kingdom and one of New Zealand's largest publicly listed companies. He has had extensive involvement in strategy, marketing (including product management), communications and change management.

Phil was appointed General Manager of Strategy and Marketing in October 2014 and then General Manager of Development in January 2017. He is responsible for the development of the SBS Group and SBS Bank strategy, marketing, communications, product management, business intelligence, and business change.

He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees with first class honours in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, from the University of Canterbury.

Hamish Mckenzie 

Hamish Mckenzie  BA (History), LLB

General Manager People and Support

Hamish is a qualified lawyer with more than 27 years’ experience, working in both the public and private sectors. He has extensive HR experience and has held various executive leadership roles in New Zealand, Australia, South East Asia and the United Kingdom in both the financial services and retail sectors.

Hamish was appointed General Manager of People and Support in March 2014. He is responsible for maximising the ability of SBS Bank’s people to achieve individual and organisational performance goals and targets. In addition, he is tasked with providing support services to SBS’ member banking activities.

Hamish has a Bachelor of Arts and Law Degree from the University of Otago.


Richard Hutton

Chief Digital and IT Officer

Richard is an experienced Senior Executive and People Manager with significant expertise in Digital and IT financial services. He has spent more than 20 years developing corporate vision and strategy, translating objectives into actionable plans and providing decisive leadership to multi-functional teams.

As the Chief Digital and IT Officer, Richard’s primary focus is to manage and drive digital and IT capability and development across SBS Bank. He also has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from Massey University.

Martine Milicich

Martine Milicich BSc, BCom

General Manager Member Banking

An experienced and diversely skilled general manager / banker with a track record for achieving strong business growth results within a variety of areas of Retail banking.

Martine has extensive knowledge of general management and leadership via a variety of roles and project involvements – distribution, strategy, product management, digital channel management, sales management, product training, lending operations, contact centres, contract negotiations and M&A activities.

As a member of the Executive team at SBS Bank, Martine is responsible for managing and leading all Retail Distribution channels - branch network, contact centre, brokers and Mobile Mortgage Managers. 

Grant Dermody 

Head of Rural and Commercial Banking

Grant is an experienced senior banking executive who has spent the past 15 years working in the financial services industry in New Zealand. He has finance and management experience and has held various leaderships roles in New Zealand and abroad.

As Head of Rural and Commercial Banking Grant is responsible for the development and delivery of SBS Bank’s rural and commercial strategy.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Chartered Fellow of the NZ Institute of Company Directors he was appointed Chairman of SBS Bank in 2012. 

John is the former Chancellor of the University of Otago (2009 -2017), and currently chairs Otago Innovation Ltd, the H&J Smith Group and the University of Otago Foundation Trust.

John is also a director and trustee of various private companies and entities.

K J (Kathryn) Ball

K J (Kathryn) Ball   BCom, FCA

Deputy Chair

Mrs Ball, a practising chartered accountant and taxation specialist, was appointed to the board of SBS Bank in April 2006. She is a principal in Invercargill accounting firm McIntyre Dick & Partners Ltd and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. Prior to becoming a director, Mrs Ball had been the independent representative on SBS Bank’s audit committee for five years and was a member of the SIT council until December 2005, serving periods as deputy chairwoman and the audit and finance committee’s chairwoman.

G J (Greg) Mulvey

G J (Greg) Mulvey


The Invercargill Licensing Trust’s general manager for more than two decades, Mr Mulvey joined the board of SBS Bank in 2004. He is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management. A director of DB South Island Brewery Ltd, Mr Mulvey is also a trustee of the Stadium Southland Charitable Trust.

 M J (Mike) Skilling

M J (Mike) Skilling BAgriSci, PGDipBank

Mr Skilling joined the board in August 2014. He has in depth experience in retail, private, rural and business banking together with insurance, managed funds and finance companies. Mr Skilling is a director of seven Boards - three large scale farming enterprises, a motor vehicle importer and financier, a pre-school business, an investment house rental business and a finance company. He was a founding director of The ICEHOUSE and Board Member and Trustee for eight years. He is a judge of the Auckland Business Awards and the Indian Business Awards. He is a Fellow of Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA) and a member of the NZ Institute of Directors.

A L (Anne) McLeod

A L (Anne) McLeod BCom, LLB

Ms McLeod, a corporate commercial lawyer based in Dunedin, was elected to the Board in 2015. She has considerable experience in banking, business and legal industries. She is a Fellow of the Te Rangi Hiroa College, a Member of the Institute of Directors, RITANZ (Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association New Zealand) and a Member of the Banking and Financial Services Law Association.

A J (Joe) O’Connell BCom CA

A Chartered Accountant and Member of the Institute of Directors, Joe joined the Board of SBS Bank in June 2017.

He serves as a Director on a number of Companies including Powernet, Electricty Invercargill and was Chairman of Invercargill Airport Limited from 2011 – 2016.

He has worked in many industries including transport, timber, concrete, petroleum distribution and property.


M P (Mark) O’Connor BCom, FCAANZ, FNZIM

Mark is a qualified accountant who has primarily been involved in senior management roles in the NZ Port sector for over 25 years. He is the former CEO of NZX listed company South Port NZ Ltd, a position he held for 18 years.

Appointed to the SBS Board in August 2018, Mark is Chairman of Invest South Ltd and a Director of Back Country Foods Ltd, Calvary Hospital Southland Ltd and the Southland Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Audit & Risk Committee for NZ Customs and has been active in the Southland Regional Development (SoRDS) programme. He currently chairs the SoRDS Aquaculture Working Group and is a member of the SoRDS Transitional Advisory Group.
